Colouring Hair with Effortless Radiance

I like to say I invented an old Hong Kong-ese proverb, which tells us that hair is like the curtains in your house. How many years have you had those same old curtains up - a year? Maybe five? Have you ever thought to redecorate, change the colour or update the style?

If you’re looking through the same windows for your whole life, with boring old curtains, it seems to wash the world in a bland overtone. Those ugly curtains are such an eyesore that they steal your attention from the gorgeous views outside! So, is it time to update your curtains?

Colouring can add a skip in your step, and an extra layer of shine to your life. Hair colouring is a lifestyle, one that many people love because of how easy it is for them to feel confident when they leave the house.

There are a few things to consider before getting your hair coloured, such as your skin tone, the style you’d like, and how subtle or obvious you’d like the colour to be. Want my professional advice? Let’s talk!

Balayage and Ombré

Balayage is a French word that means “to paint”, which accurately describes how I free-hand paint pieces of your hair to create a multi-dimensional, highlighted look.

This technique has gained popularity due to its effortless glow that reminds us of summer days as young children, when our hair was bleached from playing in the sand and sun.

                                BEFORE                                                            AFTER

Balayage echoes memories from years past, and gives you the ability to leave the house feeling bouncy and youthful without excessive prep or styling. The complexity of layers and tones that this technique creates is what makes it such an easy choice for people who want to change up their old routine.

Ombré, despite being confused with Balayage at times, differs as it creates a gradation in the hair. There is a gradual increase in lightness from root to ends, and is a popular choice for people who don’t want to spend much time updating their roots.

Both of these techniques can be used with any hair colour, as they manipulate the reflection of light to emphasize the shine in your hair, while maintaining a naturally beautiful appearance.

What Are Babylights?

Although highlights have lost some steam in the face of Balayage and Ombré, don’t overlook the sweet subtleties of Babylights.

Babylights are the perfect beginning to your hair colouring routine. This style allows you to experience the post-summer, blonde highlights, without having to change your whole hairstyle.

I'll use a delicate colour technique to brighten your hair with fine highlights that frame the face. When we were children, fine baby hairs would bleach in the summertime after time spent outside, and babylights mimic the natural lightening during everyone’s favourite season.

This technique gives your skin and face a glow that is usually from time spent outside, lapping up the sweet sun. Brighten up your days with Babylights!

Matching Your Skin Tone

Understanding your own skin tone and choosing a colour to go with it can be challenging. I can help you choose the most suitable colour during your appointment, but here are a few tips and ideas to get you thinking about your hair journey.

First, to get an idea of your skin tone take a look at the veins in your wrist. Can you see them? If they look blue or purple, it shows your skin tone is cool, whereas green looking veins indicate a warm complexion. If you see both, you’re most likely neutral.

Next you can take a good hard look at your own soul - as the eyes are the window to the soul. What colours do you see - golden undertones? If so, you might have warmer colours in your face, whereas lots of blue and green, you may have a cooler complexion.

When choosing a hair colour to complement your complexion, it’s often recommended to go with the opposite. Warmer skin tones should choose cool colours, and cool skin tones vice versa.

Warm colours include red, orange, and gold tones, which can warm up your face without having to apply that extra layer of blush or foundation. Cool hues could include platinum blonde, ash, black, or cherry red.

Although they may seem leagues apart, warm and cool colours can be mixed and layered in your hair. By building off of your natural beauty and complexion, we can find colours that leave an effortless impression.

It’s a Lifestyle

When I help people take the first steps on their hair journey, I always encourage them to think about the long term effects of the style that they’re getting. What do you want out of this experience?

A lot of my clients say: effortless. They want to leave the house feeling shiny and fresh without having to spend an hour styling their hair. Colouring your hair can elevate your mood, confidence, and lift the stress of feeling rushed in the mornings to get “done up”.

My goal is to help real people feel radiant, which I do with paint strokes that layer gorgeous hair tones to brighten up their eyes, smiles, and life! Drop me a line, and let's make a masterpiece together.
